Pros

He gets straight to the point. If like me, you have been dabbling in too many areas of interests I have without really committing to get better at any one of them, then this will be a wakeup call for you. I personally needed to hear it from him how important it is to specialise, and I like how straight forward he is in the course about what’s needed if you are serious about getting a job in games.

He’s not just educating you; he’s coaching you. I found the course quite encouraging and his method of delivery makes the student really want to get started in following his advice and taking the steps to getting that job!

He teaches you how to use Linked In, in the best possible way. For many Linked In users with an account (myself included), we have put minimal effort into our profile, and as such have profiles that don’t stand out to employers. In fact, I never bothered to look for connections, groups or even update my job history once in a while. (Hardly surprising then that I’ve never gotten a job via Linked In because of it. You get out of it what you put in.). Rick goes though many profiles to show you how you should be editing your own profile, and he discusses what companies look for, as well as the things you should avoid that can get you ignored by them.

He really prepares you for interviews. I wasn’t expecting so much help on the actual interview aspect, so I was pleasantly surprised while taking the course. He tells you in depth how to prepare and what you should be ready for, in order to present yourself effectively to the interviewer. Even if you don’t get the job the first time, his lessons are quite useful, and of course, practice makes perfect!

It’s not just for total newbies. For anyone already with a games-related job, his advice should still be followed. You may not want to stay in that job forever, and these courses can help you find something elsewhere when and if the time comes. Having said that, after taking the course, a lot of lessons can be applied to other industries as well. This course is specifically for the games industry, but he gives great advice about writing your CV and the way to communicate with companies, as well as the importance of proving your value to them when searching for work. You can actually apply his tips and tricks to other industries if you wish to do so.

Cons

I tried, but honestly can’t come up with any cons regarding this course. I think it’s great just the way it is!

Summary

This is my favourite course on Udemy so far, I found it motivating and inspiring to me, to get on with the career path that I’ve wanted to be on for years now, but didn’t really know how to get started. The instructor speaks clearly with prepared content and shows plenty case studies to support the lessons. His coaching is very encouraging, making this course the great kick in the backside that I needed to get a move on in changing my career, and for anyone who has been as sedentary as I have then I would suggest you give this course a try. Not only is it great for helping you get started, but also for teaching you to keep good habits that continually show businesses you are worth hiring.
